Many people think about body weight mainly in terms of appearance, heart health, or blood sugar. But weight can also affect the way some of your joints feel and function, especially the joints that support much of your body during everyday movement.

If your knees, hips, or other joints have been bothering you, extra body weight may be one factor worth considering. That does not mean weight is automatically the cause of joint pain. Joint problems can have many different causes, including injuries, osteoarthritis, inflammatory conditions, and changes in the muscles and tissues around a joint.

Still, body weight and joint health are closely connected in some important ways.
