Doing the same movement over and over can be part of everyday life. You might spend hours typing, kneeling, lifting, gardening, using tools, playing tennis, or repeating the same motions at work.

Most repetitive movements do not automatically cause a problem. Plenty of people perform the same activities for years without developing joint pain.

But repeated stress can sometimes contribute to pain, stiffness, swelling, or irritation in and around a joint.

When should you seek medical advice?

Consider speaking with a healthcare professional if joint pain is persistent, keeps returning, is getting worse, or is interfering with your normal activities or sleep.

You should also seek medical advice for significant swelling, warmth, redness, or severe pain, especially if you feel unwell or have a fever. Sudden severe pain after an injury or an inability to put weight on a joint also deserves prompt attention.

Because joint pain can have many different causes, it is better not to assume that repetitive movement is the whole explanation.
